Principles of Operation

Local contrast works by first creating a copy of the original image from which all of the small amplitude variations have been removed. This image is then subtracted from the original image to give an image which contains only the small amplitude variations. Optionally, very small variations (e.g., noise) can be removed from this small amplitude image. The small amplitude image is then multiplied by a scale factor, to increase the size of the variations, and then added back to the original image. This process is illustrated in the following diagram.
